Job Description for Co-Coordinator of PSU MECHA (El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan).
 

M.E.Ch.A. is committed to advancing the civic and human rights of Chicanos in attempt to solve any educational, political, and social problems which Chicano people. To promote communication between all Chicano students in colleges and high schools and to mobilize and motivate the youth of our state to fight for rights as Chicanos. To encourage opportunities available in furthering their education. To provide an atmosphere which can promote and support the success of the Chicano student in Higher Education. To educate our respective campuses on the issues facing Chicano students on campus and in our communities. To promote awareness and pride in our national identity, in the rich culture and language of our people, and express this heritage in art, music, theater, and dance. To support the struggles of other progressive movements on out campus in our communities, and internationally.

Responsibilities:

The Coordinator will plan, publicize, and facilitate all meetings. Plan and publicize at least three educational and/ or cultural events per term. Will represent M.E.Ch.A. on all PSU committees pertaining to Latinos. In addition, we will appoint a M.E.Ch.A. representative to serve on the multicultural Center Advisory Committee.
 

Educational Value:

The educational value for this position will be at .50 level. This position will provide significant learning and growth opportunities in a co-curricular context that will expose the Coordinator to challenges in leadership development and team building on campus, and with the community. Through guidance and instruction received from the student development office and faculty advisor, the coordinator will learn skills to fiscal operations, as how to build effective coalitions on interest and concern, problem solving, program planning, budgeting, time management, critical thinking and conflict resolution.
 

Level of Responsibility:

This position will carry a .5 level of responsibility. The position impacts a moderate number of students at Portland State University. Responsibilities include fiscal accountability, programming, and planning. Consequences of weak performance are great for students who participate in this program.
 

Time:

This position involves irregular and/or inconsistent hours that will be determined by the needs of the various constituencies served. Satisfactory performance of this position will be judged according to the extent to which the duties and responsibilities outlined below are fulfilled regardless of the number of hours actually worked. The level of expected time for the position is .5 which averages to 10 hours per week.
 


Minimum Qualifications:

Have an understanding of Chicano issues and be committed to developing and maintaining a comprehensive cultural and educational program, which addresses these issues. Be acquainted with the Chicano community at PSU and in Portland and/or be willing to further acquaint themselves within the community. Have basic organizational skills. Have a commitment to the functioning and success of M.E.Ch.A. Must maintain good academic standing through out time of employment.
